There should be a point to updating all of your trucks, at least for the functional items. Here are some suggestions: - Cab/Console: Reduces driver fatigue/rest requirements. - Chassis: Allows hauling the heavier loads. - Engine: Allows hauling the heavier loads/reduces trip time. - Tires: Increases fuel efficiency.

You don’t need to hire drivers. There’s no content locked behind hiring drivers. You are free to play the game however you want. I’m like you, and I love just driving on my own. But usually after I have played on the same save game for a good while and I try different trucks and stuff, sometimes I begin hiring them.
Nope, the hired drivers in both ATS and ETS2 are just scripted. So you never see them on the road, but i know they had it implented in one of the 18 wheels of steels games.
